All right, let’s get into this TikTok shop thing today.
So recently, a few months ago, I decided to sign up for TikTok and start building an account. I started building my account and I got approved for TikTok shop and approved to start promoting content on TikTok or products on TikTok. The first thing I noticed about trying to promote products on TikTok was they don’t have nearly as many products as Amazon does.
So it’s harder to find products that I already had to promote. So I did find a couple and I started the snowball effect, if you will. I started getting them on my TikTok shop and started promoting them.
The next thing is people started reaching out, wanting me to promote their products. Many of them, as expected, are willing to send you free samples, and a surprisingly large amount, I was actually really surprised, wanted you to buy their product, but they would pay you really good commissions. And when you looked at the sell through on these products, as can be expected, these products had very low sales and it wasn’t worth paying for a product to review the product to hopefully maybe someday make money.
So number one, somebody is offering you free product that has no sell through. It probably isn’t worth promoting. You’re probably not going to make the millions that they promise.
Another thing a lot of them said was that they would be willing to put advertising money behind each one of my promotions. Not one of them did. Even the ones that I had more relationship with or more contact with and felt more comfortable with.
Yeah, none of them actually put money behind it. Like they said, they would, none of them paid for advertising. None of them did any of that stuff.
So the only views I got were the views that I produced myself. So I then found a few more products. I did do a couple of those, send me a free sample and I’ll review your product.
Here’s what I found over my time with TikTok. There are products that will make you good money. I had a couple of products.
Whoa, sorry about that. I had a couple of products that hit really well and they made me really decent money. I wouldn’t say bonkers money, but they made me decent money in a few days.
But then they petered out. So TikTok is not an evergreen thing like Amazon is. TikTok is a hit and then it’s done.
So you could take products that are hitting and make videos maybe weekly for them or bi-weekly or monthly, whatever cycle you want until that product has run its course. And if you’re on TikTok a lot, you’ve noticed that there are product cycles. You’ll see everybody promoting like the ice nugget maker.
And that was a big thing for about a solid month. And then it started to disappear. Then you see another product up here and it’s everywhere, maybe two or three products you’re seeing everywhere.
So that’s the first or the next thing that we notice about TikTok is it’s not evergreen. It will run a cycle. So whatever time you put into TikTok isn’t going to have a longevity effect.
Like if I put time into Amazon, products will cycle through seasons, but it appears that even though they may peter out for a little while, they’ll come back. TikTok doesn’t seem to have that comeback. Another thing that I noticed is a lot of the TikTok sellers have limited quantities.
And once they sell out of a product, they don’t restock. So you did a review for a product, it’s out there, it’s running. Maybe it did well for you, but when it ran out, it ran out, never to be seen or heard from again.
So that’s another way it’s not evergreen. On Amazon, frequently a product is continually restocked and it doesn’t run out. So overall, my thoughts on TikTok.
Let’s get to that. I told you what my experience was. I had a few hits.
I found it’s not evergreen. I found products are hit and miss. My thoughts are, to me, it’s really not worth it.
For the short lifespan of a product, even having a few hits, to me, it’s not worth my time and effort. It’s more time intensive than the Amazon program is because of the way the upload process works and the way you have to do it. It takes more time to get a product up.
And then when you do get a product up, it has a short shelf life to it. Other people would argue with me that they’ve seen bonkers results. I mean, unless you are someone who specifically had those bonkers results, I think it’s hearsay that it’s happening.
I know there are people who have had great results, but I think it’s more that one in a million type shot. You have to find the right product that hits at the right time for the right person for it to really work. I’m not personally going to be investing any more time into promoting products on TikTok shop.
There may be a product here or there that I come across that I will put up there, but I’m not going to focus anymore on TikTok shop. To me, it’s not worth it. That is my thought on it.
I am going to reutilize that time or reuse that time that I was trying TikTok shop out to put more time into other Amazon markets and also into YouTube monetization. So those are my thoughts. I hope this is helpful for you.
