If you’ve ever run an ad and got nothing—no calls, no sales, just silence—you’re not alone. The truth is, most ads fail because they’re built around what people need, not what they want.

In this post, we’ll walk you through how to build ads that actually work—ads that bring in the right customers, generate real leads, and stop wasting your hard-earned money.

Why Most Ads Don’t Work

We’re all overwhelmed with ads every day. People ignore most of them because they all sound the same: “Buy now! Limited offer! Get yours today!”

But here’s the thing:

People don’t buy what they need. They buy what they want.

Take junk food for example. Everyone says they want to eat healthy. But when it comes to spending money, they buy chips. So what do chip companies do? They label their products with “100% real vegetables” or “gluten-free” to sound healthy—even if they’re not. They speak to what customers want to believe.

Step 1: Sell the Result, Not the Features

Too many ads list all the features:

  • “We offer 24/7 service.”

  • “Our tools are high-end.”

  • “We use premium materials.”

Guess what? Your customer doesn’t care about features.

They care about results.

For example:

  • Instead of “We fix AC units,” say:
“Enjoy a cool, comfortable home today.”

  • Instead of “We repair windows,” say:
“Broken window? We’ll fix it fast.”

Step 2: Use Reviews to Know What Matters

Your reviews are a goldmine. They reveal what customers truly value. Look for repeated phrases like:

  • “So easy to work with”

  • “Showed up on time”

  • “Explained everything clearly”

Use that real feedback in your ads. People trust other customers more than they trust your sales pitch.

Step 3: Keep It Simple (Really Simple)

One ad = One offer = One action

Don’t do this:

“We fix roofs, floors, windows, and cars. Call us, text us, visit our website, or scan this QR code.”

Do this instead:

“We fix broken windows. Call now: 555-1212.”

Clutter creates confusion. Confusion kills response. Stick to one message and one call to action.

Step 4: Short Forms = More Leads

The more info you ask for, the less likely people will fill out your form. Keep it basic:

  • Name

  • Phone number

That’s it. You can get the rest once you’ve got their attention.

Step 5: Use the Remarkable Ad Form

Before you build any ad, take 5 minutes and fill out the Remarkable Ad Form. It guides you through:

  • Who your ad is for (your ideal customer)

  • What single offer you’re promoting

  • What action you want them to take

  • What success looks like (calls? revenue?)

  • Headlines and short support sentences

  • Visual ideas for print, video, or social ads

The Key: Focus on Wants, Not Needs

Most businesses advertise what people should care about.

The best ads speak to what people already care about.

Don’t sell maintenance. Sell comfort.
Don’t sell window repair. Sell peace of mind.
Don’t sell services. Sell solutions.

Action Step

Write one ad today.

Even if you don’t publish it, practicing this process helps. Then send it to someone you trust to review it.
